Biography
Jonathan E. Hughes is an Associate Professor of Economics and Associate Chair for Graduate Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he is also a Fellow of the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute (RASEI).
Hughes’ research spans environmental and energy economics, transportation economics, and public resource allocation. His work examines topics such as congestion pricing, climate change policy, freight transportation, recreation on public lands, and the design of market-based environmental policies.
His publications have appeared in leading journals including Nature Energy, American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, Review of Economics and Statistics, and the Journal of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists. His research has been covered by media outlets such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and WIRED.
He serves on the Editorial Councils of the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management and the Journal of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists, and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Transportation and Public Utilities Group (ASSA).
Hughes earned his Ph.D. in Transportation Technology and Policy from the University of California, Davis. He also holds a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Duke University (magna cum laude) and an M.Sc. in Materials Science and Engineering from Cornell University.
He joined the University of Colorado Boulder faculty in 2009 and has collaborated with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). From 2018–2019 he was a Research Economist with the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER).
